Substrates Effects on CdTe Thin Films Using Double Layer Thermal Evaporation

K.M.A. Hussain, M.S.S. Chowdhury

Abstract

The CdTe thin films are successfully deposited by a thermal evaporation method. In the CdTe/CdS/FTO glass and CdTe/CdS/AZO/FTO glass structures, modified double-layer thermal evaporation technique is applied for the preparation of CdTe thin films. The XRD analysis of CdTe thin films showed that the films are polycrystalline with a cubic structure. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image showed the homogeneous and uniform surface structure of the films. High conductivity of the CdTe thin films was observed for varying temperature. The high optical absorption co-efficient about 105/cm and ~1.5 eV direct band gap of the films indicate that the films are useful as an absorber for photovoltaic application in the solar cell. The research work is done to optimize deposition conditions, deposition technique, thickness and substrates of the materials. The achievement of the modified double-layer thermal evaporation method might be helpful to fabricate solar cells.
