Societal and Ethical Issues in Industrial Biotechnology

Ishika Govil

Abstract

In this paper, an overview of the major societal and ethical concerns raised by industrial biotechnology are covered. We demonstrate that present societal and ethical challenges in industrial biotechnology revolve around five key themes: sustainability, naturalness, innovation pathways, risk management, and economic fairness. Disputed public opinions drive the public discussion on the appropriateness of modern industrial biotechnology in each of these areas.
