Extraction of Essential Oil and Anti-bacterial Activity Determination of Cassia tora Seed on some Selected Microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Trichophyton rubrum and Streptococcus species)

Abstract


Essential oils have been used for extensive applications of variety of wellness throughout documented history. With massive advancement in science, essential oils today have undergone numerous refining methods to give an improved effect. The aim of this study was to extract and investigate the functional properties of Cassia tora seed oil through analytical profiling using gas chromatography. In the gas chromatographic analysis two chromatographic conditions used were the same except in column temperature ranges and it was varied in order to enhance the separation of the oils and the results obtained showed about 80% of all the oil peaks were unique and this shows how complex these oils are in terms of the constituents they contained as each peak shows the number of compounds present in the sample and this suggests the influence that these oils will bring when used for biological effects. The Cassia tora seed oil was extracted using percolate extraction method and ethanol was used as a solvent for the extraction and GC analysis was carried out to chemically characterize the various components presence in the oil. An antimicrobial activity analysis of the oil against three clinical isolates bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species and Trichophyton rubrum) were carried out in this study. It was found that the essential oil of Cassia tora has antimicrobial activity close to that of synthetic antibiotics when tested invitro, to further confirm the effectiveness of essential oils. As the oil shows high resistivity effect on Staphylococcus aureus at both percentage dilutions.
