Suitability of Various Alternative Sources of Energy for Pollution Control: A Review
Abstract
Energy is one of the most important resource for mankind. Developed societies use energy resources for agriculture, transportation and information technology. Today, the energy crisis becomes one of the global issues confronting us. Due to the increasing awareness of the depletion of fossil fuel and environmental issues, various alternative sources of energy like biofuels, solar, tidal, wind energy etc. become more and more attractive in the recent years. Production of such alternatives sources of energy like biofuel is a promising and important field of research because the relevance it gains from the rising petroleum price and its environment advantages. Bioenergy refers to renewable energy produced from biomass. Depleting fossil fuel reserves and growing demand for energy has necessitated the renewed search for alternative energy resources such as plants. Biofuels are an alternative to fossil fuel, which are liquid or gaseous fuels that are derived from biomass source. This paper reviews the history and recent developments of alternative source of energy, including the different types of biofuels, the characteristics and processing etc. The application of alternative source of energy in automobile industry, the challenges and the policy are discussed as well. The main aim of the paper is to analyse the suitability of various alternative sources of energy like biofuels etc. for pollution control with the help of literature review. The findings of the review paper suggest that biofuel is set to rise drastically in the coming years. It can replace fossil fuel as a “clean energy source”.
