PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION ANALYSIS OF RAPESEED METHYL ESTER BLENDS AS ALTERNATE FUEL FOR DIESEL ENGINE APPLICATIONS

Bh. Nagesh, Mr. V. Amosua, Prof.(Dr.) S.K. Bhattib

Abstract

Air pollution at sea is due to exhaust emissions from the marine diesel engines of cargo ships, tugs, passenger and patrolling vessels, and motorboats. The emissions from marine engines cause human health hazards like cancer in the lungs, cardio problems, effects the healthy environment, ozone layer depletion and global warming. Rapeseed methyl ester (RME) blends with diesel fuel is one of the best alternate fuels to reduce the exhaust emissions coming from diesel engine.  In the present study, experimental investigation is carried out for the performance and emission characteristics in single cylinder, four stroke, variable compression ratio (VCR) diesel engine fuelled with RME blends with diesel. It is observed from the results that the brake thermal efficiency of RME blends is slightly lower than the diesel fuel along with slight increment in the break specific fuel consumption. Hydrocarbon emissions and carbon monoxide emissions of RME blends are lower than the diesel fuel with an expense of increase in nitrogen oxide emissions. Rapeseed methyl ester blends can be used as alternate fuel in marine engine applications with slight modifications or no modifications in the engine.
