Traffic Flow Management and Conflict Resolution Strategies by Air Traffic Controllers: A Controller’s Perspective

Narendra Pratap Singh, Saifullah Khalid

Abstract

Strategic planning by augmenting structured routes and advanced procedures have been the cornerstone for developing strategies for accommodating large number of aircrafts and maintaining separation among them in the current airspace. In this process, humans are crucial because they integrate information and make judgments. In Air Traffic Control, the objective is to prevent the infringement of specified minimum separation by detecting and resolving the conflicts while maintaining the flow of traffic. Nevertheless, little is published about the common strategies used by air traffic controllers to solve conflicts between aircraft pairs. The novel concept of Flexible use of airspace (FUA) and its role in resolving conflict has also been presented in this study. This study will clarify doubts about the controller’s strategy to resolve the traffic through a simulation study.
