Dissimilar Friction Stir Welding of Precipitation Hardening Aluminium Alloys AA2024-and AA7039
Abstract
In this research, dissimilar friction stir welding of precipitation hardening aluminium alloys AA2024 and AA7039 was performed with aim to study the evolution of microstructure in dissimilar joints. AA7039 plate was kept on advancing side, whereas AA2024 plate was placed on retreating side during friction stir welding. Weld joints exhibited features typical to dissimilar friction stir welding and exhibited solid state flow pattern beside different zones. Microstructure analysis confirmed mixing of both the materials in weld region. The precipitation hardening alloys AA2024 and AA7039 are weldable by friction stir welding with promising joint properties. Complete chemical mixing of the base materials may abolish solid state flow features which is believed to occur owing to non-uniform mixing of material in solid state.
