Abstract

About 16 species of pteridophytes found in Assam (India), were selected and their variation in chloroplast rbcL gene sequences were studied. Molecular phylogenetic analysis was performed using rbcL gene sequences where a bryophyte, Funaria hygrometrica was taken as outgroup sequence. The result showed that the outgroup Funaria hygrometrica forms a totally separate branching from rest of the pteridophytic species. On the other hand, aquatic pteridophytes, Marsilea minuta and Azolla pinnata were seen to form a separate clad from rest of the pteridophytes revealing their evolutionary distance from other pteridophytes though they have a common origin as depicted by the root in the tree.
