Effect of Silicon Addition on 1% Cr Hardfacing Alloy
Abstract
Hardfacing of functional components of heavy engineering equipments enhances the resistance to wear and abrasion. Silicon (Si) metal is widely used as the deoxidizer and ferrite stabilizer. An experimental investigation was conducted using, low carbon high Chromium (Cr) steel electrode with different Si contents in the form of ferro-silicon to evaluate the influence of Si additions. In this work, Si in varying amount (1–5 wt%) is added to Fe-C-Cr welding alloys, deposits are made on low carbon steel. The microstructural characterization is done in terms of micro-hardness and optical microscopy. Brinell Hardness Test (BHN) is adopted for measurement of bulk hardness. BHN results indicated the continuous increase in hardness with increase in percentage Si while highest micro-hardness is observed in 3 wt% Si.
