GIS Based Approach for the Identification of Gaps in the Provision of Urban Amenities: A Comparison Between Srinagar and Jammu Urban Centers

Abstract

Urban amenities comprise the infrastructure, goods and services that are needed for the sustenance and growth of urban societies. Rapid urbanization and consequent unplanned growth of cities result in deterioration of infrastructure facilities and natural endowments. The reasons for the uneven distribution of urban amenities in Srinagar and Jammu are spurt urban growth and poor management planning. The paper examines provision of various urban amenities in Srinagar and Jammu cities and analyzes their spatial distribution and concentration. The gaps in the provision of amenities were identified. The prioritization of wards was undertaken using composite index tool using GIS to highlight the municipal wards facing acute shortage of urban amenities. The paper suggests that planning body must keep pace with the urban sprawl in order to ensure the equitable distribution of urban amenities in these cities.
