THERMAL DESIGN & THERMO STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF A PARTIAL ADMISSION TURBINE FOR UNDER WATER PROPULSION

Underwater propulsion systems are gaining importance in recent years, various air-independent propulsion systems are being used for underwater applications. SCEPS (Stored Chemical Energy Propulsion System) for under water vehicles such as torpedoes use a compact steam turbine in closed loop. An attempt is made to optimize the design parameters for a partial admission impulse steam turbine and to maximize turbine efficiency. Thermo-structural analysis was also carried out in support to the design parameters using ANSYS. The optimized parameters were found to be satisfactory and were within the allowable limits.
