Structural Assessment for Conversion of Tanker to FPSO Unit

Ozgur Ozguc

Abstract

This paper addresses the structural assessment for conversion of tanker to floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) in Gulf of Mexico (GoM) specified site by means of the independent analyses in accordance with CLASS Ship and Offshore Codes.

The main objectives of the work are:

  • To verify compliance with the CLASS Offshore Codes regarding structural capacity of the hull.
  • To verify the used and remaining fatigue life of the structural members based on measured scantlings assuming that the ship will stay on location (i.e.,Gulf of Mexico; GoM) for 15 years, and the first 10 years without docking. Ship trading history to be accounted for in the calculations.
  • To give a rough estimate of CLASS required modifications, if any, in order to comply with the rule requirements.

It is found that the actual trade pattern of the vessel, and other assumptions, has a large effect on the fatigue life. The assumptions made in the analyses may differ from those governing the fatigue life of this specific vessel.
