Reduction of Greenhouse Gases by Carbon Neutral Fuels in Shipping

Abstract


The earth environment is changing very rapidly nowadays. Besides that, earth showing its disturbance in the form of natural disaster and rapid climate changes. It is believed to have started in the 18th century, as a result of industrial revolution. During this period, industries were developed rapidly without having any safety measures, which leads to accumulation of various poisonous gases in atmosphere called Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Its effect was also felt in marine environment too. One of the major contributors of GHG in shipping industry is carbon dioxide.  If we can control Carbon emissions within the limit i.e., without harming our environment, we can balance environmental changes as well as reduction of GHG emission. Presently, ships are using HFO and lubrication oils, which are the main reasons for creating emissions in ships. The GHG impact on environment was highlighted from the COP 21 (Paris conference) climate mitigation agreement. Followed this, IMO has adopted segment-wise reduction of GHG emission in shipping. For each segment containing objective, to which, one of the primary objectives was reducing carbon intensity by 70% in 2050 whereby 50% reduce of GHG emission. In my study I will be studying various Carbon Neutral Fuels, CNF (like bio fuels, electro fuels, nuclear fuels, ammonia, LNG, LPG, and other fuels) available in the present market and its applicability in shipping. In my studies, I am discussing about three CNFs - Electro fuel, Fuel Cell and Methanol.
