Abstract

Starting January 2020, the shipping industry will undergo major changes in the way ships are powered for transportation. There will be a Sulphur cap of 0.5% on the use of marine fuel used in ships. The Sulphur cap on shipping fuel came with the world realizing the catastrophic effects of global warming and the melting of the ice caps, with climate change as an inevitable global issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the Sulphur caps and their effect on future ship design and construction. We also investigate the various system changes and changes in fuel that will be needed to comply with the new rule. We also cover various technological, environmental and economic realms, by providing a more comprehensive approach to finding the scale of emissions. The paper studies the use of Limestone as a catalyst for the reaction of conversion of Sulphur Oxides in the scrubber systems. We will also focus on the research going on to make the switch over from the current standard fuel to the eco-friendlier fuel. The use of desulphurization methods in Heavy Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) and Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO), is also investigated in this paper, by using Residual Coal (RC).  As time for implementation is short, corporations will be trying to select their compliance strategy, in situ to further investigation and research on the effect of the cap on the shipping industry.

Keywords: High sulphur fuel oils, low sulphur fuel oils, retrofitting, calcination, ethylene diamine (EDA), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), limestone, lime, residual coal (RC), reactive adsorption (RA), oxidative desulphurization (OD), scrubber, dibenzothiophene (DBT)
