Electronic Warfare Suite for Combat Vehicle

N D Sharma, G P Govil

Abstract

In present war scenario, any combat vehicle is vulnerable to missile attack. In these situations it becomes
essential for a combat vehicle to identify these threats before they incur loss to these vehicles. Radar Warning
Receiver (RWR), Laser Warning Receiver (LWR) and Missile Approach Warning Receiver (MAWS) are used to
search and track the missile. The threat from the Radar Guided Missile can be countered by using RF Jammer
which uses Chaff, the threat from the IR Guided Missile can be countered by using IR Jammer which uses IR
Flares and the threat from the Laser Guided Missile can be countered by using Laser Jammer which uses highly
reflective surface to counter the missile attack.
The latest trend in Electronic Warfare (EW) System is towards integration i.e. having all the warning systems
and corresponding countermeasures in the same package. The realities, then of the threat environment, the
mission requirement, the doctrines and acquisition philosophy paves way for the development of EW Suite,
which will soon become a necessity for all combat vehicles.
