Abstract

Titanium oxide (TiO2) doped with Rare-earth europium (Eu) were synthesized using sol-gel technique with subsequent annealing at 300° C. The crystallite structure and phase determination was done using XRD technique. XRD technique revealed that undoped TiO2 exhibit mixed rutile and anatase phase, whereas the TiO2:Eu sample exhibit single anatase phase. SEM results revealed that the particles are spherical shaped with approximate size ~ 15 nm. Room temperature, UV measurements shows that with increasing Eu concentration the band-gap of TiO2:Eu nanoparticles reduces in comparison to pristine TiO2. Photoluminescence studies revealed that the TiO2:Eu nanoparticles shows visible emission (611 nm) under UV (395 nm) excitation. This article highlights the role of Eu doping on structural and photoluminescence properties of TiO2 and its possible future applications.
