Biosensors: Emerging Diagnostic Tool for Detection of Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract

Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is listed among the most common bacterial infections worldwide. It is a complex disease and poses a significant repeated and persistent healthcare issuesa significant repeated and persistent healthcare issue. Antibiotics are the only first line of medication prescribed for the treatment of UTI, which are dependent on standard conventional culture-based laboratory diagnosis. These lab-based practices lead to a typical delay of two to three days which has significant impact on point of care. Due to this delay, physicians frequently initiate to administrate empirical broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment without definitive microbiological diagnosis reports. This kind of clinical practices has tremendously contributed to the emergence of multiple drug resistant pathogens which is a topic of great concern. To overrule the present clinical emergency scenario, modern technologies has come up with many reliable solutions. Among them, Biosensors are a powerful and promising diagnostic platform for infectious diseases like UTI. Similar to blood glucose sensors and home-based pregnancy testing kits, biosensors for UTI also has potential to revolutionizedrevolutionize the management of UTI diagnosis, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and treatment. However, some limitations related to sample preparation and presence of multiple pathogenic species in UTI samples barricade the technology transfer and their implication. In this review, we focus on potential biosensor technology for UTI diagnosis, its need today and in future.

Key words: Urinary tract infection, resistance, diagnostic, enteric bacteria  and biosensor.
