Abstract

Six Sigma’s credibility as process and quality improvement technique is quiet established in manufacturing and service industries as this phenomenon is mature and seasoned in these industries. However, it is a new concept in the field of disaster management. This paper endeavors to set a path way for application of six sigma tools and methodologies by establishing the links to form the firm basis for their application and employment in disaster management. In the study first through literature review it is established that disaster management is composed and based on process oriented activity driven phases of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery and that the disaster management is mostly done by the government agencies as public projects. So the projects are inherently subjected to the constraints of time, cost, scope and quality. After this; six sigma evolution, concept, methodologies and sigma levels are briefly discussed. As six sigma is a proven technique to achieve scope and excellence in quality, at the same time reducing cost and time of a project by eliminating waste, reducing variation and maintaining flow. So finally, the potential area for application and employment of six sigma tools and methodologies are recommended on the basis of established links.
