An integrated analysis of shipbuilding for industrial growth and development of India

Rajiv Sharma

Abstract

Nations that are smaller than India and suffer from multiple adversaries still have been able to advance and develop their industrial base and grow richer, e.g. Israel (44474 $US, GDP per capita) and Sri Lanka (14509 $US, GDP per capita). As a nation, we have failed to develop into a nation capable of manufacturing and to build a base that can drive India’s industrial progress. Herein, we examine the role of shipbuilding in developing a nation’s manufacturing base and show that by building upon the successful examples of Japan, Korea, and China, India too can evolve into a manufacturing driven economy. In this paper, we present an analysis of the shipbuilding and identify new emerging markets in shipbuilding markets for India. Finally, we show that India can achieve its potential through an efficient development of the ‘Defense, Industrial, Public and Private Partnership (DIPPP)’ and integration of Design in India and Make in India.
