Numerical Study of a Turbulent Flow Past a Rotating Sphere

Manish Mangal, Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Rajendra Kumar Shukla

Abstract

To simulate the flow past various geometries using commercial codes has become a standard practice in last few years. In the present study, numerical computations have been done for the flow at high Reynolds number (Re) past a rotating sphere. The Reynolds number (Re) found to be such that it indicates that the flow is turbulent. The pressure contour, velocity vector and stream function contour has been plotted and analysed using FLUENT 6.3, and the result is being validated with the experimental data reported in literatures. The effect of rotation of sphere in streamwise manner on the wake region and capturing of vortices has been analysed. The separation points are delayed due to the rotation of sphere.
